Pharmacotherapeutic group : antacid.

ATX code : A02AF02

Pharmacological properties

This drug is a combination of alginate and antacids (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide).

Refers to antacids. The action of Kyusid is based on local long-term neutralization of constantly secreted gastric juice. Reduces the content of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice to the optimal limit.

When taken orally, the drug quickly reacts with the acidic contents of the stomach. This forms an alginate gel with an almost neutral pH value. The gel forms a protective shell on the surface of the stomach contents and acts for up to 4 hours, effectively preventing the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux. In case of regurgitation, the gel enters the esophagus, where it reduces irritation of the mucous membrane.

Alginates have pribiotic properties that allow them to be used to correct various disorders of intestinal microbiocenosis. Alginates help maintain the optimal qualitative and quantitative composition of intestinal microorganisms by increasing the content of obligate (bifidobacteria, lactobacilli) and decreasing the content of opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria, such as staphylococci, fungi of the genus Candida  , etc.

Aluminum hydroxide inhibits the increased secretion of hydrochloric acid and neutralizes the activity of the pepsin enzyme in the stomach. As a result, aluminum chloride is formed, which is transformed into alkaline aluminum salts under the influence of the alkaline pH of the intestinal environment. These compounds are poorly absorbed and practically weakly change the concentration of aluminum salts in the blood.

Magnesium hydroxide also neutralizes hydrochloric acid in the stomach, transforming into magnesium chloride.

Thanks to the optimal combination in the drug, it does not have side effects such as constipation.

Antacids containing aluminum, including Kyusid, have some cytoprotective activity on the gastric mucosa, which is due to stimulation of prostaglandin synthesis. This increases its resistance and protection from necrotic inflammatory and erosive-hemorrhagic lesions due to the use of irritating and ulcerogenic agents such as ethanol, acetylsalicylic acid, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

On the other hand, aluminum hydroxide has a pronounced astringent and anti-inflammatory effect on the inflamed mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, when the drug is used 10-15 minutes before meals.

Simethicone has an adsorbent, carminative effect. Reduces gas formation in the intestines, accelerates motility, and exhibits antifoaming activity.

Kyusid acts for a long time, evenly regulating the acidity of hydrochloric acid, the effect of the drug occurs without the formation of carbon dioxide bubbles, so flatulence and a secondary increase in the release of hydrochloric acid do not occur.

Kyusid does not cause a sharp shift in the pH of the stomach contents to the alkaline side, maintaining the acidity level within 4.0-3.5.

It does not cause disturbances in water-electrolyte balance, does not develop alkalosis, and does not provoke stone formation in the urinary tract.

Kyusid has a gel structure, which allows it to effectively envelop the gastric mucosa – this contributes to the uniform action of the drug on the entire surface of the mucosa. After taking 1 single dose, the therapeutic effect begins within 3-5 minutes and lasts 70 minutes.

Pharmacokinetics

Kyusid is  a non-absorbable drug. If the correct dosage regimen and duration of treatment are observed, it is practically not resorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and has a long-lasting, uniform effect without disturbing the electrolyte balance and without creating the risk of alkalosis or other metabolic disorders. It does not irritate the urinary system and, with long-term use, does not cause alkalosis and the formation of stones in the urinary tract.

Indications for use

  • acute gastritis with increased acidity;
  • peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum (exacerbation);
  • esophagitis;
  • food poisoning;
  • duodenitis, enteritis;
  • hiatal hernia in the diaphragm;
  • flatulence;
  • pain or discomfort in the abdomen after dietary violations, excessive intake of alcohol, coffee, nicotine, or taking various medications;
  • prophylactic use of Kyusid a is advisable to prevent the development of ulcerative lesions when using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and glucocorticosteroids.

Directions for use and doses

1 or 2 tablets (chewed) if symptoms occur or as directed by a physician. You should not take more than 8 tablets per day or take the maximum dose for more than two weeks, except in situations where this is prescribed by your doctor.

For children from 6 to 10 years old, use 1/3 of the dose for an adult, from 10 to 15 years old – half the adult dose.

Side effects

In rare cases (<1/10000), allergic reactions (urticaria, bronchospasm, anaphylactic reactions) are possible. Taking large amounts (more than recommended doses) of calcium carbonate can cause alkalosis, hypercalcemia, milk-alkali syndrome, rebound phenomenon, and constipation.

Contraindications

  • severe renal dysfunction;
  • Alzheimer’s disease;
  • individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug;
  • age up to 6 years.

Drug interactions

When taking Kyusid a together with tetracyclines, cardiac glycosides, ketoconazole, histamine H1 receptor blockers , iron-containing drugs, ciprofloxacin, isoniazid, phenothiazine, rinitidine and cimetidine, insoluble compounds are formed, which reduces the absorption of the drugs.

special instructions

The interval between taking Kyusid and other medications should be 1-2 hours.

Impaired bone metabolism, mainly observed in the elderly, may be aggravated by phosphorus depletion, hypercalciuria, and inhibition of intestinal fluoride absorption caused by long-term use of aluminum-containing antacids.

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

The drug can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Effect on the ability to drive machinery and a car

The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and machinery, as well as to engage in other potentially hazardous activities that require increased concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions.

The drug should not be used after the expiration date and should be stored out of the reach of children.
